For many people, it can be difficult to recognize when it’s time to seek counseling. While counseling isn’t just for a crisis or a time in need, it often becomes important when emotions or behaviors begin to feel overwhelming or start interfering with daily life.
That can include feelings such as fear, anger, sadness or anxiety that become difficult to manage on your own.
“I would say it’s most appropriate to seek counseling when emotions or behaviors are getting to be too much to handle,” said Ben Katz, Director of Clinical Services at JFS Richmond. “Whether it be fear, anger, sadness, anxiety, when it’s really starting to interfere in other parts of your life, whether it be relationships, work, sleep, appetite.”
Another sign can be when activities that once brought joy or relaxation no longer feel enjoyable.
“Hobbies that we do for pleasure just aren’t as fun or it’s a challenge to access those things, that’s really the clue that it might be time to seek therapy,” Katz said.
Despite these warning signs, many people wait months or even years before reaching out for help. Hesitation is common and often tied to fear or uncertainty.
“It can be scary to begin therapy and to say, ‘I’m struggling to handle this on my own,’” Katz said.
For some, acknowledging the need for support can feel uncomfortable or even intimidating. Others worry about what therapy will be like or whether opening up about personal struggles will be difficult.
There are also practical challenges that can delay someone from seeking care. Finding the right therapist is vital, especially for someone who is already dealing with anxiety, depression or other emotional stress.
But reaching out doesn’t have to mean having all the answers. It simply means being open to support.
Taking that first step can lead to meaningful change. Counseling provides a safe, supportive space where individuals can better understand their emotions, develop healthier coping strategies and begin to feel more like themselves again.
No one has to navigate these challenges alone. With the right support, it’s possible to move forward with greater clarity, confidence and hope.
