For the past 17 months, Eric Horwitz has been a dedicated part of JFS Richmond, serving as an intake volunteer. Brought to JFS by his grandparents who were past clients, he continues to show up with purpose and serve his community.
Volunteering at JFS has become an important part of his routine. Intake work places him at the very beginning of a client’s experience.
When asked what he enjoys most about being at JFS, Eric is clear: the people. The relationships he forms, whether with staff, volunteers or clients, are what make the experience meaningful. Those interactions have shaped his understanding of what matters most in this work.
His biggest takeaway from his time at JFS is captured in his own words: “Empathy is the key to everything.”
At JFS, Eric hopes to continue to build friendships by offering it and experiencing it through the connections he makes.
Eric’s story reflects the heart of JFS Richmond: people showing up for one another with compassion.
If you’re interested in making a difference in someone’s life, consider becoming a JFS volunteer.
There are many meaningful ways to get involved with JFS and support members of our community. One opportunity is our Friendly Visitors program, where compassionate volunteers are matched with isolated, homebound older adults for regular companionship. Volunteers spend about an hour each week visiting, chatting, sharing hobbies, and building meaningful relationships that help combat loneliness.
