In 1849, Rabbi Maximillian Michelbacher inspired the women in his congregation to form the Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Association (LHBA) to help care for the needs of their neighbors and community members. The LHBA aided wounded soldiers during the Civil War, welcomed and helped European refugees establish new homes in Richmond, and brought frontline medical care to the homes of many during the twin pandemics of TB and the Spanish Flu. Today JFS is a professional, non-profit social services agency offering high-quality senior care, counseling for people ages 5-95, and adoption and foster care services to all regardless of age, race, faith, income, or identity. In our 7th resettlement effort, we assisted over 50 Ukrainian families and individuals in the last year arriving in Richmond. This year we proudly celebrate 175 years of Transforming Lives and Strengthening our Community.
