Long before Elnora Pryor began caring for JFS clients, she was learning what it meant to care for others from her mother.
Growing up in North Carolina, Elnora would go with her mother and siblings as her mother visited people living with cancer. She watched as her mother helped with the things they needed most, from bathing and providing medicine to ensuring they had food to eat.
Those experiences stayed with Elnora. They showed her the importance of being there for people during some of the most difficult times in their lives and inspired her to pursue a career in caregiving.
After completing training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, Elnora began what would become a decades-long career caring for others.
In April, Elnora will celebrate her 30th anniversary with JFS. Since joining the agency in 1997, she has devoted more than 60,000 hours to caring for and supporting JFS clients. She is also JFS’ October Home Care Employee of the Month.
“We are truly fortunate to have Elnora Pryor as part of the JFS family,” Chief Program Officer Andrea Wharam said. “Since joining our agency in 1997, she has devoted more than 60,000 hours to caring for and supporting our clients. Her dedication, dependability and genuine compassion have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many people we serve. We are incredibly grateful for her years of service and proud to have her represent JFS.”
For Elnora, the people around her have been one of the most meaningful parts of her time at JFS.
“I love the way JFS treats people,” she said. “Everybody’s so nice and kind. They’ve been that way to me ever since I’ve been there. After all these years, everybody’s still just so nice and kind, so I’ve just continued to work at JFS.”
When asked about her favorite memory from her 30 years at JFS, Elnora does not point to a particular event or accomplishment. Instead, she talks about the way people have treated her.
That kindness has also extended to the families of the people she has cared for. One family whose mother Elnora once supported continues to keep in touch with her, even though she no longer works with their mother.
“I’m not working with their mom now, but they say they still love me, and they appreciate me for being there for their mother,” she said. “They always keep in touch with me. I never thought people would care that much about me helping a family member.”
For Elnora, those lasting relationships are a reminder that caregiving is about more than the hours spent providing care. It is about showing up, building trust and becoming someone a family can remember and appreciate long after the work is done.
Thirty years after joining JFS, Elnora continues to bring the same spirit of compassion she first saw in her mother to the people she serves today.
