At 91, Doris Ellis Finds New Confidence Through CAPABLE

July 28, 2026 By Colton Wood Leave a Comment

A new accessible ramp, a shower chair and even a crockpot may seem like simple solutions, but for 91-year-old Doris Ellis, they have made all the difference in helping her remain independent at home.

Doris recently graduated from the CAPABLE program, a partnership between JFS Richmond and Beth Sholom, that helps older adults age safely in place through home modifications, problem solving and supportive services from an occupational therapist and a registered nurse. Referred to the program by her case manager, Ida Mitchell, Doris enrolled in February and quickly began seeing changes that improved her daily life.

Doris lives with her daughter, Diane, who serves as her primary caregiver. Before joining the program, simple tasks such as leaving the house had become more challenging.
One of the most significant improvements was the installation of a ramp outside the home by our partner project:HOMES.

“My mom really appreciated the ramp because she couldn’t get back and forth like she wanted to for her doctor’s appointment and things like that,” Diane said. “She couldn’t get out like she wanted because she had started getting weak in the knees, the legs. The ramp is a really big part of her getting back and forth. It’s also good exercise.”

The program also addressed safety concerns inside the home. Because Doris struggled to get in the shower, a sliding shower chair with a swivel seat was purchased to help her bathe safely and comfortably.

Another welcome addition was a crockpot, which allowed Doris to continue enjoying one of her favorite activities without having to stand at the stove for long periods. She has already used it to make chicken and dumplings.

“The program meant the world to me,” Doris said. “We did some cooking, they built the ramp. It meant the world to me.”

Beyond the practical improvements, Doris cherished the relationships she built with members of the CAPABLE team, especially RN Penny and OT Tomeeker. She especially enjoyed spending time talking with them during their visits.

“They have done beautiful, wonderful things for my mom,” Diane said.

For Tomeeker, watching Doris grow more comfortable and confident throughout the program was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

“It’s been great working with her,” she said. “When I first came, Ms. Ellis was a little hesitant, but after that first initial meeting, it’s been wonderful. I’m definitely going to miss working with her. It’s been great seeing her feel more confident.”

The program also provided support for Diane, who understands firsthand the challenges that come with caring for a loved one.

“It’s a challenge because I’m not going out and socializing a lot,” Diane said. “I’m always here with my mom. I don’t mind it, but I would carry my mom with me to go out to eat. It’s a big difference when you’re taking care of your loved ones. You didn’t know these things until you experience it. People might think it’s easy, but it’s not. This program has made it so much easier.”

As she graduates from the CAPABLE program, Doris leaves with a safer home and new tools to help her maintain her independence and memories of the relationships she built along the way.
